Nine Inch Nails – Pretty Hate Machine

I used to hang out with this guy in high school who was a car thief.

Well,  he really didn’t steal cars, but he would break into cars and steal the stuff that was inside….so, whatever you want to call that, that was him.

The proceeds that he garnished from this illicit hobby (he wasn’t full time) went to buying concert tickets and CDs…mostly what was considered Alternative and Modern Rock back in the late 80’s, and it was in those heady days that he dropped “Pretty Hate Mahine” on me.

To be perfectly honest, I hated it the first time and thought it was just noise.  Then the girl that I had been pining for all year ripped my still beating heart from my chest and smashed it with her heel.  The next time the album came on I grabbed his arm.

“My God!!!  It all makes sense now!!!”

What always hits you with “Pretty Hate Machine” is the raw anger and power.  That industrial metal force that knock you back into your chair, or into the nearest mosh pit.  The reason for this is front man Trent Reznor, who, aside from some help on drumming, played everything on this album.

The album itself is made up of demo material and rejected singles that Reznor had submitted over the years and spawned a few singles like ‘Head Like a Hole’ (see below,) ‘Sin’ and ‘Down in it.’  A huge success when it was released, mostly due to word of mouth, the album fell out of print in the late nineties due to a falling out with label TVT.

Every time I was faced with a bad break up…BAM!!!  this went into the CD player for a week.  Not only are the singles great, but there’s a slew of non single tracks like ‘Something I can Never Have’ that are just as great.  This album has the ability to arouse a fire-breathing demon in even the meekest of folk.

It does get your spirits up, that’s for sure..

2010 Remaster is pretty cheap!
